The premiere concert of Sandikala Ensemble—an expanded gamelan unit exploring experimental techniques, new instrument-making, and unfamiliar possibilities within contemporary gamelan practice.

Sandikala has developed a range of new instruments, including four genders built around a 36-tone, non-octave tuning system. More recently, the ensemble has expanded its setup with instruments designed by Dion Nataraja: two gambang and two sets of gong kemodhong, crafted in Klaten by Karnadi Handoko and Siswo Pradangga.

Their recent work, Epitaph, released by Yes No Wave Music, will be performed live for the first time in an intimate setting at Talujala Hub, a newly established multi-channel music venue.

Joining Sandikala are two respected acts, extending the evening into a shared space of listening, experimentation, and exchange:

Gatot Danar Sulistiyanto. A contemporary music composer and sound experts who will present his spatial sound works.

Mitch Elliott. A Sydney-based musician who uses a Lyra-8 and Ableton Live for sonic world-building. His forthcoming 2026 album is currently untitled but will be released in October, followed by a tour through Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, China and Japan.

As a small-scale, independent initiative, we see everyone involved—organisers, space owners, performers, audiences, and supporters—not simply as participants, but as active agents within a shared ecosystem. Each contributes in their own way, materially and otherwise, to making events possible, sustainable, and meaningful for everyone involved.

Supported by Rekam Bergerak, Talujala Hub, Uma Yumcha, Musik Jogja, and Sudut Kantin Project.
